With the different podcasts out there on almost any category you can think about, what are the right ways to stand out from the crowd? That is what we will be considering in this article: how to choose your podcast niche for beginners.
Do you want your podcast to stand out
As a beginner in podcasting, you must clearly define your niche if you want to stand out from the noise. To do that, you need to pay attention to the name because the name of your podcast is just as important as the content you produce.
It should be catchy and memorable. It should also be able to capture your audience’s attention and generate interest around it. But don’t overthink this. I need to be clear on that.
As a rule, though not always, your podcast names should be short, catchy, and easy to pronounce. Imagine the name appearing on the cover of a magazine or a large billboard, how does it read to you?
In general, your podcast name should relate to the central topic you want to treat, a name that should suggest – information, knowledge, and entertainment, depending on what you want to share with your audience.
Say, you are not yet sure of your main topic or what you should talk about in your podcast, you can consider doing some soul searching about your core values and what makes you happy and fulfilled as an individual.
On this topic, I have created an online training class that I titled Discover Your Life Purpose In 6 Days available on AClasses.org.
You might consider checking out the training class. The following are the key points to help you out in your soul searching.
- What do you enjoy the most that you can maybe spend your entire day doing and not feel bored?
- What subject are you passionate about? – do you have a particular topic you can easily talk to people about?
- What is your area of expertise? We are all good in some areas. What are the things that might come easy to you but hard to others?
These are all about finding your true interest because until your podcast is around your true interest, you might not find enough energy to carry on. Starting a podcast is quite easy. What is more difficult is when the reality starts splashing on your face.
I can tell you that if you find your true interest, you can withstand the storm anyhow, so do a thorough soul searching before settling on what you want to podcast about.
Determine Your podcast Audience
You know why you want to put your face out there podcasting. That is great. But do you know who your audience is? You simply cannot talk to the general public. It’s a mistake many of us made when starting out in podcasting. So, learn from those mistakes now and determine who your audience is because that will influence what you say and how you say it.
There are many ways to define your audience and their needs. You are going to be speaking to their needs, otherwise, they will not listen or subscribe to your podcast. Remember that people don’t have any time to waste.
The most important thing to do when you are trying to understand your audience is to learn about them. You can do so by gathering information from surveys, interviews, focus groups, and more.
knowing your audience and what they want can influence your choice of topic. What you say in your podcast should be based on what your audience wants, so they can find value in your episodes.
While some podcast might create their episodes around simple arguments like gossip and entertainment-related topics, some others are specific on more serious discussions such as health, education, finance which might require accurate information from experts in those fields.
At the end, it all depends on what you want to share with your audience because you are the podcast host.
What is The Importance of choosing a Podcast Niche?
Today, there are thousands of podcasts available on the internet. So, podcasters need to choose a niche that will interest their audience.
The niche format of podcasting is a great idea for those who want to create high-quality, professional content. With this method, you can easily plan out content and keep your audience engaged.
However, it is important to know that your niche will only work if it resonates with the audience’s interests. Do you know what your audience is interested in?
Note that your podcast listeners are more likely to listen and follow you if you are consistent in your podcast message and the information you share with them.
The best way to ensure you can maintain your podcast is by focusing on a particular niche that you are passionate about. By doing this, you will stay consistent and avoid any boredom or burnout.
A podcast can be focused on a specific topic or theme. For example, if you want to focus on business and entrepreneurship, then you should choose a business and entrepreneurship podcast niche as against entertainment or pure storytelling niche.
How to Choose the Perfect Podcasting Niche
Before you start thinking about your podcast, do some research and find a niche. Think of a niche as the piece of a total – a place, a specific interest, or the activity best fitting to an individual.
Picking a podcast niche is important because it will narrow down the topics that are most interesting to you. For example, if you were interested in mystery novels then your podcast would probably be around such topics as “whodunit” or “murder confess.”
If not, then maybe podcasts revolving around cooking or gardening are more up your alleys.
I understand. It can feel difficult to choose a long-term career in podcasting since there are so many different content areas you could strive towards. But you will find that narrowing your focus with a specific topic can make it easier for others to follow your work and for your content to stand out in the ultra-competitive market.
Here again, I will repeat the question “Do you want your podcast to stand out” if yes, then pay attention to these questions so you can choose a perfect niche for your podcast:
What do you enjoy doing the most?
Find what you can maybe spend your entire day doing and not feel bored. There are countless things to do in life that can make you feel empowered, relaxed, and satisfied. Make sure your podcast niche is around that.
What subject are you passionate about?
Do you have a particular topic you can easily talk to people about?
Say for instance you are passionate about writing and maybe your friends have even asked you to write their blog posts for them. A blog-related podcast, like how to start and maintain a blog for beginners can be a good place to start.
What is your area of expertise?
We are all good in some areas. Some things that might come easy to you might be hard to others. What is that thing for you? Like every other human being on earth, I want to believe you have some expertise in something. If so, what is it?
Find an area where you can feel a sense of confidence and start podcasting about that. Help people to feel the same level of confidence in themselves, tapping into your inner resources and you never face any sizeable competition as long as you concentrate on that.
Conclusion on how to Choose your Podcast Niche
Starting a podcast can be exciting, but you should take the time to carefully consider your niche.
Think about a few of your favorite topics or interests and how they might relate to your audience. There are many different aspects of podcasting that you need to know in order to be successful.
Now that you have found what you would like to podcast about, it is time to create a topic. Just note that over-thinking will not produce an interesting podcast. So, please start your work without any further delays. This is the right time to start your podcast journey.
